Product Spotlights:
Biocidin® Liquid Formula - 30ml
Not a fan of swallowing capsules? This is the formula to go for. By avoiding the hassle of swallowing up to three capsules every day, you can simply consume a drop of this formula three times every day. Like the capsule formula there is a suggested gradual increase. The recommended maximum dosage is five drops three times a day.
Biocidin LSF 1.7 oz is the same herbal blend as the original Biocidin liquid. It has a stronger dose per pump and enhanced absorption. It can also be used topically.
Biocidin® Capsules - 90 Capsules
The capsules contain the equivalent of 5 drops of Biocidin liquid.
Biocidin capsules target the entire GI tract and encourage diversity of the microbiome and proper digestion. Clinically evaluated for over 30 years, you can rest assured that this is a proven product that provides results. It can be a nutritional support or part of a cleanse with other similar products. The suggested use for this supplement is one capsule per day with a gradual increase to one capsule three times daily.
Dentalcidin Toothepaste contains the same herbal blend and non-GMO corn sorbitol. I recommend using it in conjunction with Dentalcidin LS Oral Rinse to improve mouth and gum health.
Dentalcidin LS Oral Rinse- 1 fl oz
Did you know that there is a Biocidin formula for your oral health as well? As Annie sings in the musical, “Annie,” ‘you’re never fully dressed without a smile!’ Bio-Botanical Research definitely took that quote to heart when they created this product. Made specifically to remove plaque and biofilms in the mouth, this product boasts a 4-8 week time frame where you can see results. There isn’t an unpleasant taste, so children can take it as well without putting up a fight.
Biocidin TS -Throat Spray is the same botanical formula but in a spray form. It is convenient to use and the spray delivers the herbs directly to your throat where they can fight microbes.
What is in Biocidin formulas?
The original Biocidin Liquid Formula, Biocidin LSF, Biocidin TS (Throat Spray), and Biocidin capsules all have the same botanical herbs. The ingredients can be divided into five categories: Microbial balance, Immune support, Biofilm disruptor, Anti-inflammatory, and Antioxidant. Some of the herbs are listed in more than one category because they have several actions and properties.
Microbial balance: bilberry, black walnut, echnicaea, fumitory, galbanum oil, garlic, gentian, goldenseal, lavender oil, milk thistle, noni, oregano oil, raspberry leaf, shitake, tea tree oil.
Immune support: echinacea, shitake
Biofilm disruptor: garlic, oregano oil, tea tree oil.
Anti-inflammatory: bilberry, galbanum oil, garlic, gentian, goldenseal, grape seed, lavender oil, noni, oregano oil, raspberry leaf, white willow bark.
Antioxidants: bilberry, black walnut, gentian, garlic, grape seed, fumitory, milk thistle, noni, raspberry leaf, shitake.
The research: Biocidin and Biofilms
Many high quality herbal ingredients have been medically studied. All of the ingredients in Biocidin have thousands of studies. For example, the herb milk thistle, and its extract silymarin have been tested in 1,145 medical studies. But not all herbal combination formulas have been used in laboratory tests to prove their strength. Biocidin is even more impressive because the combination of herbs has actually been used in medical studies. Here are some examples:
Biocidin was tested against biofilms created by Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus. During the test, over 90% of biofilms and their corresponding microbes were eliminated within 4 hours.
Although Lyme disease usually comes with a lot of co-infections, Borrelia burgdorferi is the main spirochete (microbe) responsible for the devastating effects. One of the main concerns with chronic Lyme disease is antibiotic resistance. Because borrelia burgdorferi is a spirochete it can easily enter your cells where it goes undetected by your immune cells. This makes it much harder for antibiotics to target, tag and kill borrelia. Another problematic characteristic is biofilms. Borrelia can create biofilms to protect colonies of infection. Both the original Biocidin liquid and Biocidin LSF were proven to kill borrelia burgdorferi in a laboratory experiment.
Biocidin and your immune system
A human trial using college athletes showed that Biocidin throat spray effectively raised Secretory Immunoglobulin A (SIga) for about 30-60 minutes after use. Secretory Iga is an antibody that protects your mucous membranes. It is found in your saliva and in your gut. If your SIga is too low you are much more susceptible to acute and chronic infections. This leads me to my recommendation of 1 spray per hour if you have been exposed to a respiratory infection or if you are beginning to feel symptoms.
Biocidin for Mold, Mycotoxins, and Candida
Candida is a type of yeast and is classified as a fungus. There are many types of candida, such as candida albicans, candida glabrata and candida tropicalis. Yeast are fungi that grow in single-celled patterns.
Mold is also classified as a fungus. There are many varieties of mold. Some are toxic and some are not. Molds grow in multi-celled patterns.
Mycotoxins are produced by mold. These are chemical compounds that cause symptoms and health complications. You can be allergic or have immune reactions to mold or their mycotoxins, or both.
Four of the ingredients in Biocidin have been proven to decrease fungal infections from both candida yeast and aspergillus mold.
Berberine is not a plant. It is a phytonutrient found in many plants. Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) and Barberry (Berberis vulgaris) plants have the highest amounts of berberine. Berberine kills fungal cells by turning off the efflux pump. Some pathogens, particularly fungi, have pumps in their cells that allow them to push out substances that would kill them---like antimicrobial herbs or medications. Berberine effectively disables these pumps so that the fungal cells are susceptible to herb or medication that will kill them.
Bilberry extract comes from the wimberry or whortleberry. It does not kill candida or mold, but does prevent Aspergillus molds from creating mycotoxins.
Garlic (allium sativum) has a reputation as old as time. It’s most notable pathogen-killing compound is named allicin. Garlic also enhances the function of your immune cells---including natural killer cells that eradicate fungus
Oregano (origanum vulgare) is part of the mint family. I learned this fact quite by accident, when my pet bunnies ate my entire freshly-planted oregano. In shock and horror, I practically flew to my computer to ensure that they hadn’t eaten something toxic. Oregano oil contains two polyphenols: carvacrol and thymol. Both have proven to be antifungal and antimicrobial.
Clostridia and Biocidin
Clostridia are a group of anaerobic (without oxygen) bacteria that live in our human digestive tracts. There are many strains of Clostridia, with the most infamous one being Clostridia difficile (C. diff). An estimated 29,000 people die from Clostridia difficile infections each year. Biocidin contains both garlic and oil of oregano which have been proven to reduce clostridium infections.
Gut-lung axis and Biocidin
In the past, medicine taught us that our lungs were sterile and didn’t have any microbes. But we now know that is incorrect. All of the organs in our body are connected and have unique microbiomes. We don’t often think of these areas being connected, but if you look at your body, you will see that your encase your small intestines. All chronic lung diseases share a common unhealthy lung microbiome. The pathway for your lungs begins in your mouth. If your oral microbiome is not balanced, more pathogens will end up in your gut. You can also breathe in microbes through your mouth that will settle in your lungs.Once in your gut those pathogens can travel via the vagus nerve or bloodstream and find their way into your lungs. Additionally, inflammatory messengers, such as LPS can be activated in your gut and create secondary inflammation in your lungs. Using Dentalcidin or Throat Spray can balance the oral microbiome, while the two liquid formulas can create balance in the gut.
Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) and Biocidin:
I have suffered with some level of SIBO since before I had even heard the term. Despite managing my diet, and eating a low carb Paleo diet, I’ve had varying degrees of gas and bloating since high school. The sigmoid and colonoscopies revealed nothing. The barium x-rays looked normal. So what was the cause of the gas, bloating and pain? A few decades ago, I tried every brand of probiotics I could get my hands on, but nothing seemed to make a difference. I now know that most probiotics are aimed at replenishing the bacteria in your colon, not your small intestines. Soil-based probiotics are essential for dealing with microbes in your small intestines.
SIBO occurs when you have too much pathogenic or good bacteria in your small intestines. If you have more than 10(5) CFU/ml of bacteria in your duodenum (part of your small intestines) then you have SIBO. However, it is important to note that symptoms of SIBO can occur with more or less than 10(5) CFU/ml of bacteria.
SIBO, Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, is a complicated illness with traditional antibiotic treatments having little success rates and large recurrence rate (up to 40% reinfection after antibiotics). Antibiotics are not selective. They will kill all bacteria and microbes in your gut, thus wiping out an entire ecological system. Although this may kill the bacteria causing your SIBO symptoms, it will leave you open to another overgrowth. If you choose to take multiple courses of antibiotics, you are at risk for a secondary C. difficile infection.
Biocidin contains several botanicals that are selective and are effective for resolving bacterial and fungal infections. Instead of killing all the microbes in your small intestines, Biocidin contains plant compounds that select pathogens and do not eradicate friendly flora.
This is a very informative podcast about SIBO and using Biocidin to balance the microbes in your gut.
Notable Ingredients:
Let’s talk about the Proprietary Herbal Blend. Many people ignore the nutrition labels and purely focus on the packaging’s aesthetic. In my opinion, the “meat and potatoes” of a product is found on the nutritional label. This is where you get all your scientific information to tell you what this product has in it and how it will affect different bodily functions. One of the notable ingredients in the Biocidin formulas is Echinacea Purpurea extract. Part of the daisy flower family, this flower is found in the prairies of North America. Native American used this herb for generations to cure various illnesses. Today, it can be used to treat pain and inflammation as well as the common cold. Loaded with antioxidants, this powerful flower has the potential to treat many illnesses and benefit your immune system.
There is an ingredient added to this formula specifically that I would like to elaborate upon. That is Clove oil. Traditionally, it has been used as an anti-microbial as well as a herbal form of pain relief for toothaches. A 2016 study tested ten natural products derived from plants to determine their strength against organisms that cause cavities. The results showed that Clove oil was the most effective at stopping cavities from developing.
In Closing...
Your health is inextricably tied to the good and bad guys in your microbiome. When those microbes get out of balance, symptoms and disease are sure to errupt in your gut, heart, lungs, and elsewhere. I’ve studied gut health for years, and I’m always looking for new information. Bio-Botanical Research’s Biocidin is a powerful formula for prevention and managing your microbiome.
