    The Science

    A Rich History

While many of us think of licorice as a flavoring in our favorite candy, licorice root (Glycyrrihiza glabra) has been sought out as an effective digestive tonic for hundreds of years. The first-century Greek physician Dioscorides gave it the name Glycyrrhiza, which comes from glukos (sweet) and riza (root). Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, and European herbalism all cite licorice root tea as a favorite digestive support remedy.

    Modern-Day Use

Licorice root is rich in flavonoids, isoflavonoids, and polysaccharides that have been shown to support the integrity of the stomach lining and mucosa. Additionally, this time-tested herb contains a naturally occurring compound called glycyrrhizin. When used over time, this compound has been shown to produce an abnormal increase in cortisol, which can lead to electrolyte imbalance and high blood pressure. By specially processing the licorice root, we can remove glycyrrhizin, creating the safest extraction for long-term use. The resulting deglycyrrhizinated licorice, or DGL, is the preferred form for safety and efficacy.
