In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, individuals consuming prolyl-endopeptidase enzyme and gluten showed lower αgliadin (a main component of gluten) concentration in the stomach and duodenum. In another randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover study, 18 gluten-sensitive subjects consumed a mixed meal containing 0.5 g of gluten. Tolerase® G (83,300 PPI) significantly degraded gluten concentrations in both the stomach and duodenum. In the stomach, median gluten levels were reduced from 176.9 mcg (range of 73.5-357.8 mcg) to 25.4 mcg (16.4-43.7 mcg, p=0.001). In the duodenum, median gluten levels were reduced from 14.1 mcg (range of 8.3-124.7) to 7.4 mcg (3.8-12 mcg, p=0.015).
The enzyme specifically degrades the immunogenic parts of the gluten protein. Research reveals that gluten-sensitive T-cells no longer react after gluten has been degraded with the enzyme. Additionally, this formula provides a unique mixture of protease enzymes and lactase to assist in the digestion of multiple constituents of milk and dairy products. Protease enzymes targeting casein and beta-lactoglobulin proteins support dairy protein digestion. Casein is the predominant protein in milk and cheese. Beta-lactoglobulin occurs primarily in the whey fraction of milk. It is an acid-stable protein and therefore may not be broken down by pepsin and pancreatin. Lactase breaks down the milk sugar lactose, helping to relieve occasional bloating or gas that some people can experience from dairy consumption.
