Prosta-Support Formula™ contains not only the base formula of Douglas Laboratories’ Ultra Specific series of products that offers intensive support for the healthy functioning of the body in general, but also the ProstaSupport Proprietary Blend providing compounds that work specifically to maintain the structure and function of a healthy prostate.
Saw Palmetto inhibits the conversion of testosterone to its more active, and potentially deleterious form, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), via inhibition of alpha-5-reductase. Saw palmetto not only inhibits the binding of DHT to cellular receptors, but also has alpha1-adrenoceptor-inhibitory properties. Alpha1-adrenoceptor antagonism may be responsible for saw palmetto’s ability to provide support to the urinary tract and prostate. Saw palmetto extracts have also been found to inhibit the biosynthesis of proinflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes.
Pygeum extract decreases prolactin and cholesterol levels in the prostate, which in turn decreases uptake and reduces the number of binding sites for testosterone in the prostate. In addition, pygeum extract, like saw palmetto, interferes with the synthesis of proinflammatory prostaglandins. Pumpkin seed and nettles are thought to have similar properties.
Citrus bioflavonoids, vitamin E, vitamin C, zinc, and selenium provide potent antioxidant protection against oxidative damage to the prostate. Vitamin D-3 is reported to inhibit cell proliferation and encourage apoptosis.
