    More Info.

LGG was first isolated in 1983 from a human donor by Dr. Sherwood Gorbach and Dr. Barry Goldin (the "GG" namesake)  and patented in 1985. It has been in clinical use since 1990.  Originally selected for its resilience and colonization properties in the GI tract, LGG exhibits well-characterized resilience in the GI tract, with robust acid and bile tolerance. Pili on the cell surface of LGG express unique proteins that enable adhesion and adequate contact with intestinal epithelial cells. These interactions facilitate beneficial effects on mucosal integrity, immunity, and motility.

    WHO IS THIS SUPPLEMENT FOR?

    • Patients with occasional abdominal discomfort and/or diarrhea
    • Patients seeking immune support

    MECHANISMS OF ACTION

LGG promotes cytokine balance in the GI tract at the level of gene expression and provides general immunomodulatory support. In preclinical models, LGG also supports intestinal barrier integrity and mucin production.

    CLINICAL RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

    Occasional diarrhea and abdominal comfort

    • In a study involving 820 people traveling on holiday to southern Turkey, LGG supplementation resulted in significant support for occasional diarrhea, particularly for older individuals, compared to placebo
    • In a study involving 141 children with abdominal discomfort, supplementation for 12 weeks offered significant support for abdominal comfort and intestinal integrity.

    Immunomodulation in the GI tract

    • In a clinical trial, LGG supplementation promoted healthy gene expression to support white blood cell (WBC) function. Elderly subjects who received LGG for 28 days showed 95 differentially expressed genes related to cellular movement, cell-to-cell signaling, and cytokine response.
    • In a double-blind, crossover study, supplementation moderated the neutrophil and monocyte immune response in dairy-challenged milk-sensitive subjects, while promoting immune function in non-sensitive subjects.

    Gut microbiota

    • In a clinical study, infants whose mothers had received LGG during the last weeks of pregnancy showed increased bifidobacterial diversity at 5 days of age.

    Respiratory and immune health

    • In a study involving children ages 1-7 attending day care, supplementation showed statistically significant support for upper respiratory tract health and immune function.
