Vitamin D, known as calciferol, is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means that it is broken down by fat and oils in the gut. It helps your body absorb calcium and phosphate from food. It is important for bone and muscle strength and immune function. Specifically, vitamin D benefits bone growth, bone remodeling, regulation of muscle contractions, conversion of blood glucose into energy. It may also help fend off inflammatory disease.
Vitamin D deficiency can lead to delayed growth in kids, Rickets in kids, loss of bone minerals (Osteomalacia) and porous thinning bones in adults (Osteoporosis).
Causes for D deficiency include being housebound, dark skin, old age, malnutrition, obesity, gastric bypass surgery, ulcerative colitis and/or diseases such as; Celiac disease, Chrohn’s disease, Cystic fibrosis and liver disease.
Vitamin D3 is the preferred method to obtain the benefits. It has better bio-availability (more of the vitamin enters the bloodstream and can be used by the body) and a better half-life (it stays in circulation in your body for longer). An additional study showed the benefit of vitamin D3 in Hypertension of older and/or obese people.
