Microbiome Labs: The Future of the Gut Health Industry

by Carly Neubert, BA, NC on October 06, 2021

Whether you have cable or a streaming platform like Hulu, you are bound to be hit by marketing ploys from various companies. Using celebrities to market products and dazzling the audience with colorful graphics is one way to enter a competitive market… Microbiome Labs, on the other hand, is doing the exact opposite in their marketing. Microbiome Labs doesn’t need to set aside big budgets for their marketing strategies, their products speak for themselves. By investing their profits into professional and impressive research processes, they are able to provide a dependable and reputable product line to their customers. This sets them apart from other supplement companies.

Microbiome Labs is a prime example of achieving the “American Dream” through ingenuity and hard work. What started as a love for investigating the claims behind probiotic supplements and their health benefits, CSO Kiran Krishnan made great strides in his research and caught the eye of Dr. Tom Bayne. The two teamed up in 2012 and created the first all-spore probiotic, MegaSporeBiotic. With their success with MegaSporeBiotic, the duo has expanded their product offerings to help hundreds of thousands of customers.

Their gut health advocacy and impressive business model has given them the necessary platform to bring more public awareness to the importance of good gut health. Who is Kiran Krishnan?  Check out his podcast if you’re hungry for more information - he covers topics from mental health to gut health and everything in between!

Microbiome Labs isn’t just improving the lives of their own customers; they are putting pressure on other supplement companies to do their absolute best to provide beneficial products to their customers - thus, improving the industry as a whole. Let’s take a look at their bestsellers and what people are saying about them:

Product Spotlights:

MegaSporeBiotic

This is the product that started it all! It’s the bestseller on Microbiome Lab’s website as well as ours. I highlighted MegaSpore and spore-based probiotics in another blog. They are significantly more beneficial than other probiotics on the market because they are better equipped to survive through our gastric system. The secret is in the spores. Bacillus spores can survive digestion without the need for refrigeration like other probiotic products. By encouraging microbial diversity and the creation of good gut bacteria, MegaSporeBiotic has many functions for your body. Anyone over the age of 5 can take this probiotic.

I recommend ½ to 1 capsule every other day and then increases to one capsule each day after one week. Possible side effects may be uncomfortable, but that means that the product is working. Common side effects are loose stools, abdominal cramping, and changes in bowel movements. Side effects usually ease up in 2-3 days. This occurs because the spore probiotics are driving out pathogenic (bad) bacteria.  This is a typical spore probiotics side effect.

“Our office LOVES this product! We can’t keep it on the shelf. We use the product ourselves and our patients are excited to try it. It has GREAT science behind it. We are always learning something new when we listen to Kiran talk about the products. We look forward to sharing this product with more of our patients.” - Robert T.

“I have been on Digestive Advantage for 5 years and saw little improvement. Within three days of being on MegaSpore I could not believe how much better I felt and still continue to feel since switching. The best probiotic out there!!!” - Angie B.

MegaMucosa

Leaky gut? No problem! If you’re looking for an option that does not require swallowing pills, this is the way to go. MegaMucosa is a powder supplement that provides immune support and gastrointestinal support to help with leaky gut. Its goal is to maintain a strong mucosal barrier. That is the barrier that holds in nutrients, the good and bad, in your intestines to be absorbed. It covers more than 150 times the surface area of our skin, making it an essential portion of our immune system. This product is revolutionary because it is the first product on the market that offers complete mucosal support. MegaMucosa is good for your digestion and your immune health.

MegaPreBiotic

MegaPreBiotic’s goal is to diversify the microbiome, support keystone species, and support overall immunity. MegaPreBiotic reinforces the microbial diversification that MegaSporeBiotic imposes in our body. This formula is good for anyone over the age of 2. Start with ½ scoop daily for a week and then move up to one full scoop daily.

Another gut health tip: Microbiome Labs recommends taking these first three options together for optimal gut health:

MicroSporeBiotic ~ Recondition

MegaPre ~ Reinforce

MegaMucosa ~ Rebuild

These formulas come in a 3-month kit or you can purchase the supplements separately. One of my clients described the kit as “life changing” for her digestion, energy, and mood.

MegaGuard

Advertised as “Nature’s Stomach Support,” MegaGuard combines the benefits of powerful herbs to balance stomach acid and overall digestion. MegaGuard also reduces bloating and abdominal discomfort. One of the primary ingredients is Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra). Licorice has a long history of being a digestive aid in traditional Chinese cultures. The suggested dosage for this digestive aid is one capsule with lunch and dinner. Licorice root contains a saponin plant compound called glycyrrhizin. Large amounts of this plant compound can cause high blood pressure and low potassium levels in some people.

Because of this risk, many supplements utilize deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) to avoid possible side effects. Microbiome Labs addresses this concern by using an entirely different plant licorice flavonoid that contains less than .5% glycyrrhizin.  Gutguard contains over 50 licorice flavonoids that support healthy and painless digestion. I recommend 1 capsule with lunch and 1 capsule with dinner. If you have gas, bloating, or indigestion I recommend 2 capsules with each meal or as needed for symptoms.

Ginger (Zinziber officinalis), another essential ingredient in the formula, has been an important part of Eastern medicine in historical record. It relieves nausea and bloating as well as encourages gastric emptying.

MegaIgG2000

If you have a dairy sensitivity like 65% of the population, Mega IgG2000 is the option for you. A lactose-free and dairy-free digestive aid that maintains a healthy gut barrier structure, this is different from other products on the market because it comes from bovine serum (the cow fetus). The suggested dosage is 4 capsules daily. I recommend you take 2 MegaIG capsules in the AM and 2 in the PM.

Hot off the Press: Studies to Look Out For

Triglyceride Study

Did you know that an increased amount of triglycerides in the bloodstream can be an indicator for heart disease? An imbalance of gut bacteria can be a cause of this triglyceride phenomenon. Just goes to show that gut health is extremely important to analyze when evaluating your overall health. Microbiome Labs has just conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study with participants with mild to moderate levels of triglycerides in their bloodstreams. The results were incredible, in my opinion. Participants that took the oral spore probiotic had significant lowering of their triglycerides in just 90 days.

Liver Protection Study

In the current pandemic, you have probably experienced the lack of supplements and vitamins in stores (and toilet paper). Acetaminophen is one of those items. We’ve all had our fair share of headaches this year so Acetaminophen has been some people’s go-to. Unfortunately, there is a risk associated with increased use of this pain-relieving medication. Microbiome Labs recently published a study on their results of spore probiotics on rats who have acute liver injuries due to Acetaminophen. They concluded in their study that the rats with Acetaminophen-based liver injuries experienced a protective effect by the Bacillus spore-based probiotics.

IBS Study

Did you know that between 25 and 45 million Americans suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)? IBS affects twice as many women as men. People search far and wide for a cure, or anything to reduce the pain and discomfort. There are many products on the market to reduce this painful condition. Microbiome Labs conducted a study with Romanian participants with IBS and found that Bacillus spore probiotics are a promising solution to their IBS discomfort and improving their health (both mental and physical).

I have been challenged with IBS and IBD for most of my life. A decade ago I couldn’t figure out why regular probiotics didn’t seem to have any effect on my symptoms. Then, I learned that most, up to 78%, of IBS is caused by small intestinal problems, specifically SIBO or dysbiosis. Traditional probiotics are strains that thrive in your large intestine/colon. While we all definitely need those strains that live in your colon we also need the ones that live in your small intestines. Those of you (and me), who have SIBO, IBS, Leaky Gut,  or other small intestine problems are in dire need of those small intestinal good bacteria. Spore-form probiotics are the group of bacteria that will thrive in your small intestines and help you deal with the underlying disorders that cause IBS, SIBO, dysbiosis, and Leaky Gut.

FAQs:

What is the best time to take MegaSporeBiotic?

The best time to take MegaSporeBiotic is with food.  Whether you take it with a meal or a snack doesn’t matter much. The act of chewing and swallowing will activate your digestive secretions (gastrin, pepsin, and stomach acid) which will help break down the capsule that holds your spores. I recommend you start with 1 full capsule at dinner. Continue on that dose for 1 week and then add in a capsule at breakfast. If you have symptoms, try starting with ½ or even ¼ of a capsule. If you want a personalized schedule, please sign up for a consultation with me.

Which is better?

MegaSporeBiotic vs Just Thrive:  At first glance, MegaSporeBiotic and Just Thrive might seem like similar formulas. But if you look at the strength you see that MegaSporeBiotic has 4 billion live bacteria and JustThrive only has 3 billion. Just Thrive only has 4 strains of bacillus bacteria while MegaSporeBiotic has 5.

Microbiome Labs has the innovation and motivation to change the probiotic and gut health industry for generations to come. It is clear that Microbiome Labs keeps their customer satisfaction and product authenticity as high priorities. To me, that is a signifier of a business that has the potential to go all the way and make a long-lasting impression on health and medicine.
