Vitamin D3 specifically manages the absorption of calcium through the production of three special proteins—calbindin, osteocalcin, and matrix GLA protein (MGP). Calbindin transports calcium within the cells and is dependent on the presence of D3 to function. Likewise, osteocalcin and MGP are both dependent on K2 and created by D3, illustrating the need for D3 and K2 to be nutritionally combined. These two proteins direct calcium to the deficient areas and away from soft tissues and arteries. Osteocalcin binds calcium to the bone matrix within the skeletal system, ensuring the development and maintenance of strong bones and teeth. Similarly, MGP protects from arterial calcification and reduces the potential for hardening of the arteries and heart disease.
The body requires sufficient D3 and K2 to sustain adequate calcium absorption and retard bone resorption. Due to the loss of calcium, resorption causes the bones to become soft, brittle, and easily fracturable. Ingesting the necessary amounts of these essential vitamins may help support normal bone health. While the body can acquire D3 and K2 through sunlight and diet respectively, approximately 50% of the population worldwide is vitamin D deficient.
