Alpha and gamma tocopherols have similar but also unique mechanisms, making their activities synergistic. Both offer important antioxidant support for lipid membranes. High intake of gamma tocopherol has been positively associated with prostate health. In addition, gamma tocopherol optimized the ability of alpha tocopherol to support the prostate. Both alpha and gamma tocopherols support arterial smooth muscle cells. In one study, gamma tocopherol provided an enhanced ability to maintain healthy nitric oxide metabolism compared to alpha tocopherol. The same study suggested that gamma tocopherol promoted greater superoxide dismutase activity in plasma and vascular tissue. In an in vitro investigation of human macrophage and epithelial cells, gamma tocopherol supported healthy prostaglandin metabolism. An additional trial revealed that a mixture of alpha, gamma and delta isomers was more effective than any single tocopherol in promoting healthy platelet function.
